There are a few restaurants that George and I eat at regularly. Sam’s is one of them. In fact, I’d say that we end up at Sam’s about once a month, and we always get the falafel.
There are other vegetarian options at Sam’s, but we like the falafel so much that we simply don’t want to skip it when we go there. We order our falafel spicy and share a side of fries. The falafels cost $4.95 each.
So, without soda, we can both eat for about $12. The sodas are free on the lucky days when the falafel is the lunch special, which seems to be on Mondays. You could also order one of their other vegetarian options, like a hummus or Greek veggie sandwich or veggie dolmas.
Sam’s is easy to miss unless you are on foot. The restaurant is a remodel of a small, old house. The accommodations are not fancy, but fit the pricing and the majority college-based clientele. If you are in a hurry, they will prepare your food to go, which brings up the point that everything at Sam’s is made to order. Well, almost everything is made to order. The baklava isn’t. It is prepared in advance, but this doesn’t keep it from being excellent. If you have a couple extra bucks and a sweet touch, I recommend the baklava to you.
In short, Sam’s is a great, quick and inexpensive option in Davis for vegetarians who like Mediterranean food. For your omnivorous friends, I have also heard good reports on Sam’s hamburgers, shawarma, and kabobs.
