Vegetarians may be surprised to find a review of In-N-Out Burger here, but since our goal is to let vegetarians know what their options are in the omnivorous world, I thought it important to let you know about In-N-Out’s “grilled cheese sandwich”.
It’s simple really—just the bun with American cheese, tomato, lettuce, onion and ‘special sauce’, but it is really good. The sponge dough they use for the bun is great, and the vegies, while just the standard faire, are always fresh. The fries are also fresh—cut in the back from real potatoes and deep fried pretty much to order. And the price is great! For less than $10, George and I each get a sandwich, fries and a soda. We always order ours with fresh onions (they also grill onions, but they are cooked with the meat which sorta contradicts the vegetarian ideal), and extra lettuce and tomato. The extra comes at no extra charge. The first bite is always hard to get my mouth around!
We rarely order the milk shakes, but I can say that when I have had them I have been pleased.
In-N-Out is a family owned company that started in Southern California and now has locations throughout the state, as well as in Nevada, Arizona and Utah. You will find them most frequently close to freeways, inviting a quick off-and-on for the hungry traveler. So, if you find yourself jonesing for fries or just hungry on a western freeway, there is something for you at In-N-Out. Your meat-eating companions will certainly be happy with the burgers, and you can be happy with the cheese sandwich.
